LOL 5! I actually own the Soul Cages Concert vid from 1991 & overall it's great. Haven't watched it for soooo long. The best trackin it is Purple Haze IMHO. That Soul Cages album was a bit too mellow for me though.

I guess out of Stings post-Police drummers, Vince came closest to Stew C. But I LOVED Omar's swing and time feel. Pure silk.

It sounds to me like Landau was playing behind the beat which might have caused VC to drag on the click.

It's funny to hear VC hit that snare sooo hard. He must have been pretty frustrated.

    Simple question:
Who here has successfully played this song?
I've tried but seem to screw it up midway through.

Damn....he hits the snare so hard after the screw-up. Was that entirely his fault though? I think not.

After checking it out again I agree with Sashal with the Sting video flub. But regardless it's how you recover that counts. All of us have flubbed a fill or came in out of a fill wrong at some point. I've seen Vinnie flub here and there but he generally recovers with few people aware of what happenned. Many times he gets a bad monitor mix in clinic or one-off performances and when your playing to a click or trying to hear the rest of the band you really need to be able to hear your monitor clearly. I think to have a thread that reads something about Vinnie actually "F&%^ing up" is expecting him to be more than human. If he doesn't F-up on a tune he might F-up on his drum tuning, or his cymbal selection, or his dinner order. I prefer to just keep it real and be happy when he isn't F-ing up. I know I'm happy when I get through a tune without F-ing it up....
Not coming down on you CL because I understand your intent but a topic like this can get microscopic (as in looking for more flaws) real fast.
As far as Sting's other drummers I dug all of them at some point.

I've never been able to play this tune. I think Vinnie is the only cat sick enough to think of it and execute it (he got it on take 2, of course!).

I think Flamaque might be right, but I think it could have been Garfield that was behind a bit... or else Vinnie had a bad monitor mix.

Vinnie was Sting's best drummer for sure IMO. NOBODY could touch Ten Summoner's Tales!

That lick that brought on the Sting stare in the Soul Cages video was deliberate and musical, however, it looks like Sting didn't dig that it happened at the top of the verse ("stepping" on his vocals).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I don't think he's 'bashing' the snare. He's merely playing it deliberately to indicate to everyone else that they should stop. It's actually a genius way to get everyone's attention; He plays a rhythm intentionally unrelated to the tempo of the song so as to immediately draw attention.

DSOP has it right... the 8th notes were to get everyone to stop and shut up. You've never had to do that before!?

speaking of bad monitor mixes and in response to one of your comments about it... when I opened for Johnny Lang, they gave us no soundcheck, and i didnt even have a monitor since their drummer was using in ears and no one bothered to put one in for me.... asses....it was very humiliating considering it was the largerst crowd i had ever played in front of...
